Northern Pike flyfishing gives anglers the most eventful experiences of
flyfishing. Fishermen refer to it as prized fish as these kinds of fish are full
of power and force. So, grabbing such fish also requires equally strong rods,
best reel and sturdy drag instruments. Huge flies such as McMurderer and Berry
Reynolds are used as baits. Northern pikes are found in deep waters and only an
experienced angler can get hold of them. Mississippi River is one of best
Northern flyfishing spots in the world. North Alberta, Sweden, Manitoba,
Ontario and Canada are the other preferred pike flyfishing areas.
Many
fishermen go out for northern pike flyfishing soon after the ice out phase in
rivers and lakes. This is after the breeding period gets over and new pikes
start growing in the chilled water. When ice breaks up in lakes, two or three
weeks later, anglers can go for fishing. These are considered as ideal
flyfishing days to catch pikes. Northern pikes are abundant eaters hence they
can be located in streams and lakes where plenty of reefs, weeds and shallow
bays are present. After this period, water becomes warmer which is not conducive
for their thriving. But they can be caught in some parts of Canada for about six
to seven months.
Northern Pike Flyfishing Techniques:
An
angler needs to sink the rod into the water and then manage the pull back
properly. Keep the line about thirty cm from above the bed and then pull back
the rod from water for few seconds and then again sink it. An individual has to
be careful not to make this action sequential as the pike may able to notice the
artificial bait. Descend the fly line with the fly attached to it at altering
depths, speed and in different paths to attract the pikes. Since pikes are
plentiful eaters they can pounce on anything that comes nearer to them. Change
the fly every time while dipping the rod in water.
Another technique involved in northern pike flyfishing is the floating method
which is also called as dry fishing method. It requires dragging of the fly
above the water surface. This method can be carried out during sunny days in
shallow lakes when northern pikes can easily view the fly floating on the
surface. Make the movements of line bit jerky. Adopt the same pull back
technique to retrieve the pike. Thus, Northern pike is amongst those fishes
which make the flyfishing adventures worth remembering.
